DC’s Best Glass Shops: The Funky Piece

Does DC’s gentrification leave you with mixed feelings? You’re probably like most of us; you love the artisan coffee, any restaurant that has multiple versions of avocado toast, and the fact that your city has an on-demand weed delivery service. But sometimes new and trending isn’t what we want most as city dwellers. Sometimes even the yuppiest of yuppies long to experience something a little rougher around the edges; something with an old school, retro vibe that can’t be re-created.

Thankfully, Adam’s Morgan is one of Washington DC’s neighborhoods that is holding on tight to its character; embracing the arts and taking pride in its quirk and diversity. It is also one of the more eclectic, historically rich areas in the city.

Two schools that were once located in the area, The Adams School and The Morgan School were originally split entirely by race, a white school and a black school. The conjoining of the two names into what is now Adams Morgan, was done as a symbolic effort to bring the once-segregated city together.

Now, the Adams Morgan neighborhood remains a thriving, diverse community with many intersectional, LGBTQIA, and 420 friendly businesses.

In continuation with our series from last week, we’re highlighting another favorite glass shop along with one of Locald’s favorite nearby hangout spots. We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to showcase these two Adam’s Morgan staples: Funky Piece and Madam’s Organ.

Glass Shop On Spotlight: Funky Piece

Voted in 2018 by The Washington DC City Paper as the “Best Source For Cannabis Accessories”, Funky Piece lives up to the name. The store sells original glass pieces from several suppliers who specialize in, you guessed it, funky looking pieces. Here you’ll find glass shaped into colorful, fun designs any pop-culture fan will love. Last time we were there, we found a bong that looks like an ice cream sundae, steam roller made to look like a Sherlock Holmes pipe, and hand-held pieces inspired by cult classics (Star Wars and Rick and Morty to name a few).

The shop also has a large supply of many tools and accessories that make the smoking experience more enjoyable. One of the best alternative products we’ve found there are called the Rowll1. It is a pocket-sized joint rolling device that stashes your papers, becomes an on-the-go grinder, and folds outward to provide a flat space for rolling all in one! Stop in and pick one up today.

Best Nearby Hangout Spot: Madam’s Organ

Once you’re feeling sufficiently Funked Up, walk one block right across the street and venture into the beloved neighborhood gem, Madam’s Organ to keep the fun rolling. It’s the quintessential divey blues bar. The atmosphere is dark and moody, the drinks are actually affordable, and the soul food they serve is even more delicious after a hit from your Local’d vape pen. But the real reason to venture out to Madam’s Organ is for the live music happening seven nights a week.

Madam's Organ is a four-story operation and you’ll find different vibe and entertainment one each level, depending on the night of the week. Favorite local blues bands play Sunday through Thursday, and nationally touring blues/ rhythm & blues acts sell out Friday and Saturday. Madam’s also features Drunkeoke (drunk Karaoke) every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday night at 9PM, and has an Open Mic Night every Wednesday at 8pm. Make sure to have cash on you in case there is a $5 cover to get in.

Local’d Challenge: The Madam's Organ Mural on the side of the building is a neighborhood landmark, and another perfect place to take a social media selfie. Snap an Insta photo of yourself at the mural whenever you stop by.
