Ordering cannabis delivery for the first time can feel slightly strange.
You browse a menu, place an order online and then someone shows up at your door with cannabis?
In Washington, DC, yes – but there’s a little more to it than ordering pizza.
DC operates a regulated medical cannabis program, and licensed Internet Retailers are specifically permitted to sell medical cannabis online and deliver orders to eligible registered patients and caregivers within the District. Delivery staff are also required to verify the recipient before handing over an order.
Once you understand the process, though, cannabis delivery is pretty straightforward.
So if you’ve never ordered medical cannabis delivery in Washington, DC before, here’s what you can expect from the moment you open the menu to the moment your order arrives.
Step 1: Make Sure You’re Eligible to Order
Before worrying about strains, gummies or delivery times, make sure you have the credentials needed to legally purchase medical cannabis in DC.
Registered DC patients can purchase through licensed medical cannabis retailers. DC also offers registration options for non-DC residents, and patients 21 or older from many recognized medical cannabis jurisdictions can use reciprocity with their existing registration and government-issued photo ID.
If you don’t currently have a registration, don’t assume that means you’re automatically unable to order.
DC’s registration process changed in August 2026 with the launch of the new MyABCA portal, which allows patient registration to be completed digitally.
We’ve also covered this process separately in our How to Get a Medical Cannabis Registration guide.
Get this part handled first.
It makes everything afterward considerably easier.
Step 2: Make Sure You’re Ordering From a Licensed Business
This is especially important in Washington.
A polished website doesn’t automatically mean you’re shopping through DC’s regulated medical cannabis program.
ABCA maintains an official directory of licensed retailers and Internet Retailers operating in the District. The agency currently lists Local’d as an operational Internet Retailer.
Internet Retailers are a specific category of DC medical cannabis business. Unlike a traditional dispensary with a public storefront, they’re designed around online ordering and delivery.
So before your first order, verify the business.
Check DC’s licensed medical cannabis retailers through ABCA
It’s one of the easiest ways to know who you’re actually buying from.
Step 3: Browse the Menu
Now we finally get to the fun part.
A licensed cannabis menu may include categories such as flower, pre-rolls, vape cartridges, disposable pens, edibles and concentrates, depending on what’s currently in stock.
If you’re new to cannabis, don’t feel pressured to understand every product immediately.
Start with the format.
Do you want traditional flower?
Something ready to use like a pre-roll?
An edible?
A vape?
Once you’ve narrowed that down, compare the individual products within the category.
And we’ll say it again, don’t automatically buy whichever product has the highest THC percentage.
Genetics, cannabinoids, terpenes, product format, serving size and your individual tolerance can all matter.
That’s exactly why we’ve been building our Cannabis 101 library.
Step 4: Read the Product Information
Don’t just look at the picture and price.
With flower, look at things like the strain, cultivator, package size, cannabinoids and terpene information when available.
With edibles, pay particular attention to THC per serving and the total amount in the package.
With vapes, determine whether you’re buying a complete disposable device or a cartridge that requires a separate 510-thread battery.
And with concentrates, make sure you understand what format you’re purchasing and how potent the product may be.
Our How to Read a Cannabis Product Label guide is particularly useful if you’re placing your first order.
A little reading before checkout can prevent a lot of confusion after delivery.
Step 5: Enter Your Delivery Information Carefully
Make sure your address, apartment or unit number and contact information are correct.
If there’s something unusual about the delivery location (a difficult entrance, apartment building, front desk, call box or another detail that would help the driver find you) provide useful delivery instructions when the ordering system allows it.
DC delivery rules require the order to go to the eligible District address provided for the delivery. Medical cannabis deliveries may be made to qualifying residential and commercial building addresses within DC, subject to restrictions.
The easier you make the address to locate, the easier the delivery tends to be.
Step 6: Double-Check Your Order Before Checkout
Before pressing that beautiful Place Order button, give the cart one final look.
Check:
- The products and quantities
- Your delivery address
- Your contact information
- Any applicable discount or promo code
- The order total and applicable fees
- Any required patient information
This takes approximately 30 seconds and can prevent an order from arriving with two vape cartridges when you thought you bought two disposable pens.
That would be a disappointing moment to discover you don’t own a battery.
And yes, Local’d carries rechargeable 510-thread batteries in our Accessories section.
We’ve planned for this emergency.
Step 7: What Happens After You Place the Order?
This is probably the part first-time customers wonder about most.
Once you’ve submitted the order, the retailer needs to process it, verify the necessary information and prepare the products for delivery.
The exact workflow and communication method can vary between businesses.
Depending on the retailer, you may receive order confirmation or updates as the order moves through the process.
If something is wrong with your information or a product becomes unavailable, customer support may also need to contact you.
Don’t ignore your phone immediately after ordering.
The mysterious number calling you may not be someone trying to sell you an extended car warranty.
It could actually be about your cannabis.
Step 8: How Long Should Cannabis Delivery Take?
This depends on the business.
At Local’d, our typical delivery window is approximately 30-60 minutes throughout Washington, DC, depending on your location, traffic, weather and current order volume.
That isn’t a guarantee that every driver can magically teleport through Connecticut Avenue at 5:15 PM.
DC traffic unfortunately will always remain undefeated.
Major events, road closures, weather and unusually busy periods can all affect delivery times.
If you’re curious about this part of the process, our How Long Does Weed Delivery Take in Washington, DC? guide explains the factors that can affect an ETA in considerably more detail.
Step 9: Stay Available While You’re Waiting
This one matters.
Cannabis delivery isn’t a normal unattended package delivery.
Under DC rules, Internet Retailer delivery staff must verify the identity and age of the patient or caregiver before transferring possession of the order. The recipient must actually be present at the eligible delivery location.
So please don’t place an order and then decide:
“This seems like a great time to go grocery shopping.”
Keep your phone nearby and be available when the driver arrives.
Step 10: Have Your ID and Patient Credentials Ready
Your driver isn’t being nosy when they verify who you are.
It’s part of the regulated delivery process.
ABCA requires licensed retailers to verify patient credentials and government-issued photo identification for medical cannabis transactions, and delivery staff must confirm the identity of the person receiving the order.
Having everything ready makes the handoff much faster.
If you’re a visitor using reciprocity, make sure you have the applicable patient registration and valid government-issued identification required for your situation.
Can the Driver Just Leave My Cannabis at the Door?
No.
This isn’t DoorDash.
DC law requires delivery to the qualifying patient or caregiver and prohibits simply leaving the cannabis without verifying the recipient’s identity.
So:
“Leave it under the doormat.”
Unfortunately cannot happen.
Someone eligible to receive the order needs to be there.
Can Someone Else Accept My Order for Me?
Generally, don’t plan on it.
The delivery is intended for the qualifying patient or their appropriately registered caregiver, and the delivery staff must verify the person receiving it.
Your roommate, friend, neighbor or hotel receptionist shouldn’t be treated like a substitute simply because they’re conveniently standing nearby.
If you’re placing the order, plan to be available to receive it.
Can You Get Cannabis Delivered to an Apartment Building?
Eligible residential building addresses within Washington, DC can receive medical cannabis delivery under District rules.
For apartment buildings, provide accurate unit and access information and pay attention to communication from your driver.
Depending on the building, meeting the driver at an appropriate entrance may make the handoff much easier than sending them on an expedition through seventeen identical hallways.
What About a Hotel?
Eligible commercial building addresses in Washington, DC may also qualify for delivery, provided the location isn’t otherwise prohibited. District and federal government property are excluded from eligible delivery locations.
Hotels may have their own policies regarding deliveries and cannabis, so it’s sensible to understand the property’s rules as well.
We covered this in much more detail in our guide to medical cannabis delivery for visitors to Washington, DC.
And remember: being legally eligible to receive a delivery at a location doesn’t automatically mean cannabis can be consumed anywhere on that property.
Those are separate questions.
Can Local’d Deliver to Maryland or Virginia?
No.
Licensed DC Internet Retailers are not permitted to deliver outside the District, and ABCA specifically requires delivery operations to remain within DC rather than traveling through surrounding jurisdictions to make deliveries.
That means Bethesda isn’t DC.
Arlington isn’t DC.
Silver Spring isn’t DC.
Even if you can practically see Washington from where you’re standing.
The delivery address itself needs to be an eligible location within the District.
Can You Get Cannabis Delivered to Federal Property?
No.
This one is particularly important in Washington because federal property is everywhere.
DC medical cannabis delivery rules prohibit delivery to federal and District government-owned property.
Don’t assume that simply having “Washington, DC” in the address means the location is eligible.
When you’re unsure about an address, check before ordering.
Do You Have to Tip a Cannabis Delivery Driver?
Tipping isn’t what determines whether you’re legally eligible to receive an order, and it shouldn’t be confused with any required delivery fee or order charge.
If the business permits tipping and you choose to tip your driver for good service, that’s your decision.
The important thing is to look at your checkout total so you understand what charges are actually part of the order.
Don’t assume a tip is already included unless the retailer specifically tells you that it is.
What If There’s a Problem With the Order?
Contact the retailer.
Maybe the wrong item arrived. Maybe something is missing. Maybe you have a question about a product or your delivery.
Don’t try to solve a legitimate order problem by chasing the delivery vehicle down Massachusetts Avenue.
Use the retailer’s customer-support channel so the issue can be documented and handled appropriately.
This is one reason we mentioned customer service in our recent guide on How to Choose a Cannabis Delivery Service in Washington, DC.
Fast delivery is great.
Having somebody available when something goes wrong matters too.
What Should You Do After Your First Delivery?
First: make sure the products you received match your order.
Then keep the packaging and labels with the products so you can reference important information later.
Store everything appropriately.
We conveniently just wrote an entire guide called How Long Does Cannabis Stay Fresh? A Guide to Proper Cannabis Storage, which explains how light, heat, air and moisture can affect cannabis products.
And if you’re trying a product or format that’s new to you, don’t assume someone else’s normal amount should become yours.
Cannabis response and tolerance vary from person to person.
Start cautiously and give yourself time to understand how the product affects you.
First Cannabis Delivery? Keep It Simple.
Your first order doesn’t need to be complicated.
You don’t need to understand every terpene.
You don’t need to memorize every cultivator in Washington.
And you definitely don’t need to order six different product formats simply because they’re all available.
Choose something you understand.
Read the product information.
Make sure your credentials and delivery information are correct.
Stay available.
Have your ID ready.
That’s basically it.
