Walk into a cannabis shop or browse an online menu and you’ll probably see two familiar options almost immediately: flower and pre-rolls.
They may contain the same type of cannabis, but the experience of buying and using them can be pretty different. Flower gives you more control over how much you use and how you prepare it. Pre-rolls prioritize convenience by doing the preparation for you.
So which should you choose?
As part of our Local’d Cannabis 101 series, we’re breaking down flower vs. pre-rolls, the advantages of each, and what beginners should know before choosing between them.
First, What Is Cannabis Flower?
Cannabis flower refers to the dried and cured buds of the cannabis plant. It’s one of the most traditional cannabis formats and usually comes packaged in different quantities, such as an eighth (3.5 grams). With flower, you’re buying the cannabis itself rather than a ready-to-use product. That means you’ll generally need to grind it and prepare it yourself using your preferred method.
The big advantage is control. You decide how much to prepare, how much to use at a time, and how you want to consume it.
What Is a Pre-Roll?
A pre-roll is cannabis flower that has already been ground and rolled for you. Instead of buying loose flower and preparing it yourself, the product arrives ready to use. Pre-rolls are commonly sold individually or in multi-packs and come in different sizes, strains, and potency levels.
For many consumers, especially beginners, the biggest appeal is simple: Convenience. There’s no grinding, rolling, or additional preparation required.
Flower vs. Pre-Rolls: What’s the Main Difference?
The cannabis inside can be very similar. The biggest difference is how it’s prepared and packaged. Think of it this way:
Flower = more control
Pre-rolls = more convenience
Neither is automatically “better.” The right choice depends on what matters most to you.
Why Choose Flower?
More Control Over Quantity
Buying loose flower allows you to decide exactly how much you want to prepare at once. You aren’t committed to the amount contained in a particular pre-roll. That can make flower especially appealing to experienced consumers who already know their preferences.
More Product Visibility
One advantage of purchasing flower is being able to see the buds themselves. You can observe characteristics such as appearance, structure, and aroma before preparing it.
More Flexibility
Flower can be prepared in several different ways depending on your preferences and equipment. Pre-rolls, by comparison, are already prepared for one particular format.
Often Better for Regular Consumers
If flower is something you purchase frequently, buying it in larger quantities may make more sense than purchasing individual pre-rolls repeatedly.
Why Choose Pre-Rolls?
Convenience
This is the obvious one. Pre-rolls require essentially no preparation. For someone who doesn’t own a grinder or doesn’t know how to roll, that makes them one of the easiest ways to purchase flower.
Beginner-Friendly
Cannabis menus can feel overwhelming when you’re new. Pre-rolls remove several steps from the process. Instead of figuring out how much flower to purchase and how to prepare it, you can choose a strain and format that’s already ready to go.
Easy to Try Different Strains
Buying an entire package of flower isn’t always necessary if you’re simply curious about a new strain. Individual pre-rolls can provide an easy way to explore different options without purchasing a larger quantity.
Easy to Store
Pre-rolls typically come in protective packaging that makes them easy to keep organized and helps protect them from unnecessary exposure to air and light.
Are Pre-Rolls Lower Quality Than Flower?
Not necessarily.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about pre-rolls. Quality depends on what cannabis goes into the pre-roll and how the product is manufactured. Some pre-rolls use high-quality ground flower, while product quality can vary between brands. That’s why purchasing products through a licensed medical cannabis retailer matters. Look at the product information, cannabinoid content, strain, manufacturer, and labeling rather than assuming every pre-roll is identical.
Are Pre-Rolls More Expensive Than Flower?
It depends.
You’re paying partly for convenience when you purchase a pre-roll because the flower has already been prepared and packaged. If you’re a frequent flower consumer, purchasing loose flower in larger quantities may provide better value. If you only want a small amount or want to try a particular strain, however, buying a pre-roll can make more sense than purchasing an entire package of flower.
So don’t look at price alone. Think about how much you’re actually going to use.
What About Infused Pre-Rolls?
This is where things get a little different.
Some pre-rolls are infused with cannabis concentrates or other extracts to increase their cannabinoid content. These products can be significantly more potent than traditional flower-only pre-rolls. If you’re new to cannabis, check the label carefully and don’t assume an infused pre-roll will provide the same experience as a standard one. For beginners, a traditional flower pre-roll may be the simpler place to start.
Which Is Better for Beginners?
For many beginners, we’d give the slight edge to pre-rolls. Not because they’re inherently better, but because they’re easier. You don’t need:
- A grinder
- Rolling papers
- Rolling experience
- Additional preparation
You can also purchase a smaller quantity while figuring out which strains and products you prefer. Once you become more familiar with flower, purchasing loose cannabis may give you greater control and flexibility.
Which Is Better for Experienced Consumers?
This is where we’d lean toward flower. Experienced consumers often know exactly what they like and may appreciate having greater control over quantity, preparation, and product selection. But plenty of experienced cannabis consumers still keep pre-rolls around purely for convenience. You don’t have to choose one forever.
Flower vs. Pre-Rolls: Quick Comparison
| Flower | Pre-Rolls | |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation | Required | Ready to use |
| Convenience | Moderate | High |
| Control | High | Moderate |
| Beginner-friendly | Moderate | High |
| Easy to sample strains | Moderate | High |
| Good for regular consumers | Excellent | Good |
| Equipment needed | Usually | Minimal |
How to Choose
If you’re still undecided, ask yourself a few simple questions.
Do I want maximum convenience?
Choose a pre-roll.
Do I want more control over quantity and preparation?
Choose flower.
Am I trying a strain for the first time?
A pre-roll may be a good starting point.
Do I regularly purchase cannabis flower?
Loose flower may make more sense but ultimately, there’s no universal winner. The best product is the one that fits your preferences, experience level, and routine.
