If you’re new to cannabis vapes, the terminology can make something relatively simple sound much more complicated than it actually is.

Disposable vape. All-in-one. Cartridge. Cart. 510 thread. Battery.

They may all appear in the same section of a cannabis menu, but they aren’t necessarily referring to the same thing. One product may be ready to use right out of the package, while another requires a separate battery before you can use it at all.

For this edition of Local’d Cannabis 101, we’re breaking down two of the most common formats you’ll encounter, disposable vapes and 510 thread cartridges, so you can understand how each works and what you’re actually buying.

First, What Is a Cannabis Vape?

At the most basic level, a cannabis vape uses a battery-powered heating element to heat cannabis oil and create vapor that can be inhaled.

Unlike smoking flower, this process doesn’t involve lighting cannabis with a flame. The battery supplies power to a heating element inside the device or cartridge, which heats the oil to produce vapor.

Where things start to look different is in the hardware.

Some vapes combine the cannabis oil, heating element, mouthpiece, and battery into one device. Others separate the oil-filled cartridge from the battery that powers it.

That’s essentially the difference we’re talking about today.

What Is a Disposable Cannabis Vape?

A disposable, often called an all-in-one vape, contains everything you need in a single device.

The cannabis oil is already inside, the battery is built in, and the mouthpiece is attached. There’s no separate cartridge to install and no separate battery to purchase.

Depending on the particular device, it may activate automatically when you inhale or have another activation method. Some newer all-in-one devices also have charging ports that allow you to recharge the built-in battery if necessary before all of the oil has been used.

That’s where the word “disposable” can get a little confusing.

A rechargeable disposable doesn’t suddenly become a reusable 510 system. You’re simply recharging the battery inside the all-in-one device. Once the cannabis oil is gone, you don’t unscrew the empty cartridge and replace it with another one.

The entire unit has reached the end of its useful life.

Why Do People Choose Disposable Vapes?

The biggest advantage is simplicity.

You don’t have to determine which battery you need or connect different pieces of hardware. For someone who has never used a cannabis vape before, an all-in-one can be a relatively straightforward introduction to the format.

They’re also compact and portable, and there’s no separate battery to keep track of.

The tradeoff is that you’re purchasing new hardware along with the cannabis oil each time. Once the product is finished, the battery can’t simply be paired with another cartridge.

That brings us to the other option.

What Is a 510 Thread Cartridge?

A 510 thread cartridge, usually shortened to a 510 cart or simply a cart, is a prefilled cartridge containing cannabis oil.

Unlike an all-in-one vape, however, the cartridge doesn’t have its own complete power source. It needs to be attached to a compatible battery before it can work.

The cartridge screws into the battery using what’s known as a 510-thread connection, which has become a widely used standard for cannabis vape cartridges. That standardization is useful because a compatible rechargeable battery can generally be used with many different 510 cartridges rather than requiring an entirely new battery every time you change products.

So the easiest way to remember it is:

Disposable/all-in-one = cartridge and battery together.

510 cartridge = cartridge and battery are separate.

Once you understand that distinction, the rest becomes considerably easier.

What Is a 510 Thread Battery?

The battery is the reusable part of a 510 setup.

You attach a compatible cartridge to the threaded connection at the top of the battery, and the battery supplies the power needed to heat the cartridge.

Some batteries are extremely simple and activate automatically when you inhale. Others have a button, multiple power settings, preheat functions, or adjustable voltage.

For a beginner, you don’t necessarily need every feature available. The most important thing is making sure the battery and cartridge are compatible and following the instructions provided with the battery.

When the cartridge is empty, you remove it and attach a new compatible cartridge to the same battery.

That’s the major difference from an all-in-one device.

Disposable vs. 510 Cartridge: Which Is More Convenient?

That depends on what you mean by convenient.

If convenience means opening the package and having everything you need in one device, an all-in-one has the advantage.

There’s nothing additional to purchase or connect.

If convenience means having one rechargeable battery that can be used with different compatible cartridges over time, a 510 setup may make more sense.

Once you already own the battery, replacing an empty cartridge is usually just a matter of removing the old one and attaching the new one.

Neither format is automatically better. They’re simply two different approaches to accomplishing essentially the same thing.

What About Cost?

This is another area where looking beyond the initial purchase can be helpful.

An all-in-one includes both the cannabis product and the hardware required to use it. With a 510 setup, there may be an additional upfront cost if you don’t already own a battery.

After that initial battery purchase, however, you generally keep the battery and only replace the cartridges.

So someone who purchases cartridges regularly may appreciate having reusable hardware, while someone who uses vapes infrequently may prefer the simplicity of an all-in-one.

Price also varies significantly by brand, oil type, cartridge size, and product quality, so the format alone doesn’t tell you whether a particular product is a good value.

Do 510 Batteries Work With Every Cartridge?

Not necessarily.

The 510 connection is widely used, which gives consumers a lot of compatibility across products, but proprietary vape systems also exist. Those systems may use their own pods, cartridges, or batteries that aren’t compatible with standard 510 hardware.

If you’re unsure, look at the product description or packaging before purchasing.

A product labeled as a 510 thread cartridge should be paired with a compatible 510 thread battery.

And don’t force a cartridge onto a battery if it doesn’t fit properly. That’s usually a pretty good indication that something isn’t compatible.

What About Adjustable Voltage?

Some rechargeable 510 batteries allow you to change the voltage supplied to the cartridge.

Changing the voltage changes how much heat is delivered to the cartridge’s heating element, which can affect things like vapor production and flavor.

That doesn’t mean beginners need to start experimenting with every setting immediately.

If your battery has adjustable settings, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the recommendations for the particular cartridge you’re using. More heat isn’t automatically better, and using inappropriate settings can affect the experience or the hardware.

For a straightforward battery without adjustable settings, there’s even less to worry about.

Are All Vape Cartridges Filled With the Same Cannabis Oil?

No and this is where the conversation gets more interesting than simply choosing between two pieces of hardware.

Cannabis vape products can contain different types of extracts and formulations, and their cannabinoid and terpene profiles can vary significantly.

Two cartridges that look nearly identical from the outside can contain very different products.

That’s why we wouldn’t recommend choosing a vape based entirely on whether it’s disposable or 510 compatible. Once you’ve decided which hardware format works for you, take a look at what’s actually inside it.

Check the cannabinoid content, terpene information when available, extract type, serving or potency information, ingredients, and testing information on the product label.

What About Terpenes?

If you’ve ever wondered why two cannabis vapes can smell or taste completely different even when they contain similar THC levels, terpenes may be part of the explanation.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds found naturally in cannabis and many other plants, and different cannabis products can contain different terpene profiles.

Rather than assuming the THC number tells you everything about a vape, look at the broader product information.

Which One Is Better for Beginners?

There’s no universal winner.

A disposable or all-in-one vape may appeal to someone who wants the simplest possible setup with no separate hardware to purchase.

A 510 cartridge may make more sense for someone who likes the idea of keeping one rechargeable battery and being able to switch between compatible cartridges over time.

For a beginner, we’d focus less on finding the format that’s supposedly “best” and more on understanding what you’re buying.

If you choose a disposable, you’re getting the cannabis oil and battery together.

If you choose a 510 cartridge, remember that you’ll need a compatible battery.

That’s really the most important distinction.

Don’t Forget About Battery Safety

Because both formats involve lithium-ion batteries, the hardware deserves some attention too.

Follow the manufacturer’s charging instructions, use the appropriate charging equipment, keep batteries away from extreme heat, and stop using hardware that appears damaged or is behaving abnormally. Batteries and cartridges should generally be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Used vape devices and batteries also shouldn’t automatically be treated like ordinary household trash. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and local battery or electronic-waste disposal options for appropriate handling.

And, as with all cannabis products, keep vapes securely stored away from children and pets.

The Bottom Line

The difference between disposable vapes and 510 thread cartridges sounds technical until you strip away all the terminology.

A disposable or all-in-one vape combines the cannabis oil and battery into a single device.

A 510 thread cartridge contains the cannabis oil but attaches to a separate rechargeable battery that can be reused with other compatible cartridges.

All-in-ones offer simplicity. A 510 setup gives you reusable hardware and greater flexibility between compatible cartridges.

Once you know which format you’re looking at, you can focus on the things that matter just as much: what’s inside the product, its cannabinoid profile, its ingredients, its testing information, and whether it’s appropriate for what you’re looking for.

And suddenly the vape section of the menu makes a whole lot more sense.
