Washington, DC’s medical cannabis market includes national names, longtime local cultivators and brands specializing in everything from flower to concentrates.
Molecular Farms falls firmly into the local category.
The Washington, DC cultivator has been operating since 2015 and takes a somewhat different approach to cultivation than many consumers may picture when they think about commercial cannabis production. Molecular Farms emphasizes greenhouse-grown cannabis cultivated using natural sunlight, organic soil and modern cultivation techniques.
And despite the name Molecular Farms sounding slightly like somewhere you’d expect to see people walking around in white laboratory coats, the company’s identity is heavily centered around the plant itself.
Here’s a closer look at Molecular Farms, how it grows cannabis in Washington, DC, and the types of products you may encounter while browsing a medical cannabis menu.
What Is Molecular Farms?
Molecular Farms is a Washington, DC cannabis cultivator and manufacturer.
The company has been cultivating cannabis since 2015 and currently operates from Ward 5 in Northeast Washington. ABCA recognizes them as a licensed Cultivation Center and Manufacturer.
That distinction is important.
A DC cultivation-center license permits a business to grow medical cannabis for distribution through licensed manufacturers, retailers and internet retailers, while manufacturers can process and package cannabis products for distribution through those licensed sellers.
In other words, Molecular Farms isn’t simply a cannabis brand whose products happen to appear in DC.
It actually grows and manufactures cannabis here.
Is Molecular Farms Cannabis Grown in Washington, DC?
Yes. Molecular Farms operates in the Northeast area of Washington, DC, and handles cultivation, harvesting, trimming, curing, processing, manufacturing and packaging of cannabis plant material.
That makes Molecular Farms another useful example of something we’ve been highlighting throughout our Brand Spotlight series:
Not every cannabis product available in Washington has the same relationship with the city.
For patients interested in learning where their cannabis comes from, Molecular Farms has a particularly direct connection to DC.
What Makes Molecular Farms Different?
This is where the brand gets interesting.
Molecular Farms describes its cultivation approach as combining full sunlight, organic soil and greenhouse growing conditions with modern cultivation practices. The company says its goal is to produce flower with pronounced terpene profiles and consistent cannabinoid content.
Greenhouse cultivation occupies an interesting middle ground.
Rather than relying exclusively on artificial lighting indoors, greenhouse cultivation can make use of natural sunlight while still giving cultivators considerably more control over the environment than traditional outdoor growing.
That doesn’t automatically make greenhouse cannabis “better” than indoor-grown flower.
Cultivation quality depends on far more than whether the sun or a grow light provided the energy.
But it does give Molecular Farms a distinct cultivation story compared with many brands on a typical cannabis menu.
Why Does Molecular Farms Talk So Much About Terpenes?
If you’ve been following Cannabis 101, you already know where we’re going with this one.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found throughout nature, including in cannabis, and they contribute to many of the distinctive aromas associated with different cultivars.
Molecular Farms puts particular emphasis on aroma and flavor in the way it describes its flower, specifically highlighting the essential oils, or terpenes, present in its plants.
That’s another reason we don’t recommend comparing flower based exclusively on THC percentage.
Two products with similar THC numbers can have different genetics and terpene profiles and may smell, taste and feel noticeably different to the individual consumer.
If names such as limonene, myrcene, pinene and caryophyllene still look like chemistry homework, our Cannabis Terpenes Explained guide is a good place to start.
Molecular Farms Flower
Flower is a major part of the Molecular Farms identity.
The company describes its flower as greenhouse-grown, with cultivation centered around sunlight, soil and preserving the plant’s aromatic characteristics.
As with other cultivators, the individual strains available through DC retailers can rotate as harvests arrive and products sell through.
That’s why we don’t want to turn this article into a permanent list of every Molecular Farms strain that’s available today.
Six months from now, that list could be completely wrong.
Instead, when comparing Molecular Farms flower, look at the current genetics, cannabinoid information, terpene profile when available, package size and batch information.
Our Cannabis Flower Explained guide goes much deeper into how to compare those details if you’re relatively new to shopping for flower.
Molecular Farms Isn’t Just a Flower Company
This is probably the biggest reason I didn’t want this article to become another generic cultivation profile.
Molecular Farms currently identifies several different product areas within its operation, including flower, solventless products, pre-rolls, vapes and oils.
That means you may encounter the Molecular Farms name in several different sections of a DC cannabis menu.
And those formats aren’t interchangeable.
Someone shopping for a traditional eighth of flower is making a very different purchase from someone looking for a vape cartridge or solventless concentrate.
Understanding the format first makes comparing individual products considerably easier.
What Does “Solventless” Mean?
Molecular Farms specifically highlights solventless cannabis processing as part of its product lineup, including hash, rosin and vape products.
The basic idea behind solventless processing is that the extraction method doesn’t rely on chemical solvents such as butane or propane to separate desirable cannabis compounds from the plant material.
Instead, solventless products can be produced using techniques involving factors such as pressure, temperature, water and physical separation.
That doesn’t mean every solventless product is identical.
Hash and rosin, for example, are different formats produced through different processes.
We’ve covered these distinctions more thoroughly in Cannabis Concentrates Explained, which is a particularly useful companion article here.
And yes, this is also where I am contractually obligated to remind everyone that concentrates can contain substantially higher concentrations of THC than traditional flower.
What About Molecular Farms Vapes?
Molecular Farms also produces vape products, including cartridges and disposable all-in-one devices.
If you’re shopping for one, check the hardware before ordering.
A traditional 510-thread cartridge requires a compatible battery, while an all-in-one disposable device includes the necessary hardware.
This sounds obvious until someone orders a cartridge and realizes approximately 45 seconds after delivery that they have absolutely nothing to attach it to.
Our Disposable Vapes vs. 510 Thread Cartridges guide explains the difference in considerably more detail.
And yes – Local’d carries rechargeable 510-thread batteries in our Accessories section for exactly this reason.
Molecular Farms Pre-Rolls
Pre-rolls provide another way to encounter Molecular Farms flower without purchasing a larger package.
The company describes its pre-roll production as focused on consistency and flavor, and pre-roll availability can vary as individual strains and batches rotate.
For someone trying an unfamiliar cultivator or strain, a pre-roll can sometimes represent a lower-commitment option than purchasing a larger quantity of flower.
Just remember to compare the actual product information.
A pre-roll from one strain isn’t automatically equivalent to another simply because both have the Molecular Farms name on the package.
How Should You Choose Between Molecular Farms Products?
Start with product type.
Are you looking for flower, a pre-roll, a vape or a concentrate?
Then compare what’s currently available within that category.
Look at the strain genetics, cannabinoid information, terpene profile when provided, package size and product description.
And resist the temptation to automatically choose whichever item has the highest THC percentage.
I realize we’ve now said this in approximately 147 Local’d articles. But that’s because it’s one of the easiest mistakes to make when browsing a cannabis menu.
Potency matters.
It simply doesn’t tell you everything about a product.
Is Molecular Farms Licensed in Washington, DC?
Yes. DC’s Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration currently lists Molecular Farms as an operating Manufacturer and Cultivation Center in Ward 5.
Under District law, cannabis cultivation and manufacturing businesses must be licensed before cultivating, manufacturing or distributing medical cannabis products within DC’s regulated system.
That’s an important distinction when shopping in Washington because DC’s cannabis landscape can still be confusing.
Checking the regulator’s official business listings is one of the easiest ways to verify whether a cultivator or manufacturer is participating in the licensed medical cannabis market.
Where Can You Find Molecular Farms in Washington, DC?

Why Local Cannabis Brands Are Worth Knowing
One thing we’ve wanted this Brand Spotlight series to accomplish is helping patients understand who actually produces the products they’re seeing on the menu.
Cannabis shopping can easily become a blur of strain names and THC percentages.
Knowing the cultivator adds another piece of information.
With Molecular Farms, that story includes more than a decade in Washington’s cannabis market, greenhouse cultivation, natural sunlight and soil-based growing, along with manufacturing capabilities that extend into solventless products, vapes and oils.
That doesn’t mean everyone will prefer the same Molecular Farms product.
Cannabis preferences are personal.
But knowing where a product comes from gives you considerably more context than simply choosing the biggest number printed beside THC.
The Bottom Line

Its cultivation philosophy emphasizes greenhouse-grown cannabis using natural sunlight and organic soil, while its broader operation extends beyond flower into pre-rolls, solventless products, vapes and oils.
